[English]

Today, advances in technology have transformed various aspects of everyday life. One such transformation is the emergence of a new phenomenon known as the selfie, which has profoundly altered the character of twenty-first-century life. Selfies emerged following the development of social networking platforms and the incorporation of front-facing camera technology into smartphones. This growing fascination has led many researchers and enthusiasts to search for the first selfie in history, directing attention to the self-portraits of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar, taken either of himself alone or together with his wives. However, can this category of photographs produced by the Qajar monarch truly be regarded as selfies? A definition has been proposed for the selfie as a distinct genre within the art of photography, one that establishes both its technical and conceptual boundaries. According to this definition, a selfie must be taken either with a front-facing camera or through the use of a mirror, thereby enabling the photographer to present an image of themselves within their surrounding environment. Consequently, all photographs in this category taken by Naser al-Din Shah—except for those produced using a mirror—fall outside the definition of the selfie. Furthermore, because these photographs were not intended for an immediate and broad audience, and because selfies are rarely, if ever, created with the intention of being preserved for posterity, none of these images can properly be classified as selfies. Another important issue is that describing these photographs as selfies involves a form of historical anachronism, which ultimately renders such a classification untenable.
