[English]
As a result of the rift that had emerged between the state and the clergy during the reign of Reza Shah, Mohammad Reza Shah sought to restore relations with the religious establishment. During the time of Ayatollah Boroujerdi up until the rise of Ayatollah Khomeini, no major confrontation occurred between the monarchy and the clergy. However, following the emergence of Ayatollah Khomeini and the formation of a relatively unified clerical front against the regime, the Shah attempted to cultivate support among members of the clergy. Accordingly, he extended his patronage to clerics who did not follow Ayatollah Khomeini and who adopted positions that differed, to varying degrees, from those of the opposition to the royal court. Such clerics received the court’s attention regardless of their religious rank or social standing. One notable example was Asadollah Riyazi, an ordinary and relatively unknown cleric, who attracted considerable attention from the royal court solely because of his support for the Shah and his activities, including traveling to various towns and cities in Azerbaijan and promoting loyalty to the monarchy through sermons delivered in mosques and from the pulpit. By examining Riyazi’s activities within this historical context, the present study investigates his reciprocal relationship with state institutions and seeks to answer the question of why the Shah and the royal court devoted such attention to this otherwise obscure cleric. The findings demonstrate that, as the legitimacy of the Pahlavi regime was increasingly challenged by Ayatollah Khomeini, the Shah's government attempted to counter anti-monarchical propaganda by supporting Riyazi and other like-minded clerics, employing them as religious advocates to confront the growing wave of opposition to the monarchy.
